Make a Splash Day #2

Come join us at the library this morning for Day 2 of SRP.  We are going to read some stories and make a craft, before enjoying some treats!

Fish Biology

We kicked off Summer Reading at the Corning City Library on Thursday, June 3 at 9:00 with a presentation by fish biologist, Ely from the Kansas Dept. of Wildlife and Parks.  He and some helpers brought some fish, insects, and other aquatic life into our domain for a lesson.

Thirty-two children attended this program, for a total of 56 people including adults.  We learned some interesting things.  For instance, the fish we commonly call “Perch”, is actually not perch, but a Green Sunfish.  The KDWP has bred a hybrid fish, a cross between a sauger and a walleye, called a saugeye.  Gizzard Shad are food for Striped Bass, Saugeye, and other bigger fish.  Did you know that Striped Bass can get up to 40 lbs?!

These are only a few of the things we learned.  Everyone enjoyed the program thoroughly, and a big thanks to Ely for giving it!

Also thanks to the FCE Unit Ladies of Corning for donating the cookies, and the older teens and adults who helped out. :-)

Come Sign-Up for Summer Reading!

Once again, summer is just around the corner.  We will be having our annual SRP, “Make A Splash READ”.

The program will be on every Thursday morning in June.  6/3, 6/10, 6/17, and 6/24 from 9:30 to 11:00.

This year, we are going to add a reading contest for the teen group, Ages 10-18.  The theme is “Make Waves at Your Library”.

We also have some “special” activities planned for the end of the program, as well!  I promise they will be fun!

SO, stop in, Wednesday, May 26 from 5 pm to 9 pm for Summer Reading Program Sign-Up.  Children Ages 3-9 can participate in Make a Splash READ! Ages 10 – 18 will qualify for the Make Waves @ Your Library program.

Please stop in and we will hand out program materials, information for parents, get consent forms signed, and sign up for email notifications.  It really helps me out if I can get an estimate of attendance beforehand!

I will post more information about the upcoming events at a later date.

See you Wednesday, May 26th!
