“Paws, Claws, Scales & Tales”

The annual Summer Reading Program was held the first four Thursdays in June-the 1st, 8th, 15th, and 22nd. This year’s theme is “Paws, Claws, Scales, and Tales“.

Thank you to parents who pre-registered their children for the SRP.

The SRP kicked off Thursday June 1st with “Down in the Swamp” a performance by musical entertainer Thad Beach. It took place in the Corning City Park. Children got to sing the “Swamp Critter” song while Thad accompanied them with his harmonica and ukulele. Then the children got to play homemade instruments from Thad’s “Band in a Bucket”. They had a blast!

June 8th, the children met in St. Patrick’s Schoolhouse at 9:30. We began with assembly, where we took roll, putting a star next to each child’s name indicating their attendance, and handing out their name tags. Then the children split up into three groups, Group A being ages 3-5, Group B ages 6 & 7, and Group C, ages 8 & 9. The next hour and 15 minutes, the children attended 20 minutes breakout sessions. One session included Story Time, where the children got to hear a story, sing songs, color, and complete activities. The next session was Crafts, where the children made farm and zoo animal magnets out of foam. The final session was me taking the children to the library to check out books. Finally, at 11:00, we went back to assembly, where the children received refreshments, and goodie bags, including a sucker, stickers for their reading logs, and a coupon for a free ice cream cone at McDonald’s. It was hot, but the children had fun.

June 15th, the children again met in St. Patrick’s Schoolhouse at 9:30 to attend story time, and make crafts–lady bug and frog foam thermometers. Children received goody bags containing Free DQ treat tokens, more stickers, and a recipe for homemade ice cream.

June 22nd, the last day of the SRP, featured live animals brought by the Milford Nature Center. Children received their certificates, stickers, and a pencil and animal eraser. T-Shirts were also handed out to those who read the most books in each age group. A list of winners is below. The children got to see snakes, a lizard, an iguana, an opossum, and a prairie dog.
